Connecting your own domain to an application.

Add a domain, set the DNS record the panel shows (A for the root domain, CNAME or A for a subdomain), get HTTPS automatically and redirect www to the root or the other way round.

2 MIN READ

Every application has a free address, https://<name>.rivervo.app. You can add your own domains to a running application on its Domains tab.

1. Add the domain

Domains → enter the domain (example.com or www.example.com) → Add a domain.

If the domain already points at the application, it works at once. Otherwise the panel shows Waiting for DNS and the record to add.

2. Set the DNS record

At the company where the domain is registered (or wherever its DNS is managed), add the record the panel shows:

DomainRecord
Root domain — example.comA record with the application's IP address; an AAAA record (IPv6) is shown as optional
Subdomain — www.example.com, app.example.comCNAME to <name>.rivervo.app — or the A record, whichever your DNS provider prefers

Copy the values from the panel exactly. If the domain is registered with Rivervo, see Managing DNS records.

DNS changes can take up to an hour. We check pending domains automatically and switch them on as soon as they point at the application; Check on the domain does it right away.

3. HTTPS

Once the domain is connected, an SSL certificate is issued automatically and renewed by itself. Visitors are served over HTTPS; there is nothing to install.

www and the root domain

Add both example.com and www.example.com, then choose for one of them under Visitors:

  • Opens the app — both addresses show the application.
  • Redirects to example.com (or to www.example.com) — a permanent redirect that keeps the page address, so links and search rankings carry over.

Most sites keep one main address and redirect the other one to it.

«Update the DNS record»

If the application moved to new resources — this can happen when you change them — the domain keeps working, but the panel may show Update the DNS record with a new value. Update the record at your DNS provider for the best speed, then click Check.

Removing a domain

Remove next to the domain: the application stops answering at that domain. The free rivervo.app address keeps working.

Domains for previews and services

Branch previews have their own addresses and don't need domains. A web service of a project gets its own free address and can have domains of its own on its Domains tab, in the same way.
